Developers are set to begin construction on CityNorth, a huge commercial and residential mecca in northeast Phoenix on 144 acres west of Scottsdale adjacent to Desert Ridge Marketplace.
The 5.5 millionsquare-foot mixed-use development will be near the interchange of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway and state Route 51 between Tatum Boulevard and 56th Street.
Developers say the project promises the best aspects of city living by combining residential, office, retail, cultural and entertainment space.
One of the developers, the Thomas J. Klutznick Co., says CityNorth will feature open spaces with art; a captivating range of shopping, dining and entertainment; eye-catching architecture; unique residential opportunities; a luxury hotel; and corporate and professional offices — all in a multiblock, pedestrian-friendly setting.
“To have a project of the stature and size of CityNorth is a testament to the vitality and continued growth of the Northeast Valley,” said Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, in a prepared statement.
Gordon said the project will have a significant economic, physical, cultural and social impact on the area.
Phase One of the development, which begins this month, will include nearly 1 million square feet of space comprising retail, restaurant, office spaces and residential units.
Situated at the northernmost end of the property, south of Deer Valley Drive, will be High Street, consisting of 11 three- or four-story buildings and approximately 264 residential condominiums and apartments for sale and lease. They’re scheduled to open in spring 2008.
In August, Nordstrom, the highend apparel retailer, said it would take 144,000 square feet of space on two levels of CityNorth. The store is expected to open in fall 2009. The project also will offer designer boutique stores.
