US Airways is moving forward with long-standing plans to expand its presence into downtown Tempe.
The company has developed drawings for a multistory building on Mill Avenue. Taxpayers have been giving incentives to the hometown airline since 1998 to construct the building. The airline has already missed two deadlines for the expansion, but the city has been lenient, granting extensions.
US Airways approached Tempe with preliminary plans for a new building shortly before making its takeover bid for Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines last month. Spokesman Morgan Durrant said the company doesn’t expect efforts on the new building to slow despite the potential deal with Delta.
Durrant said the merger has not stalled the project, but that the airline isn’t ready to divulge any details or give a timeline.
