Trouble for Monti’s 100 Mill Avenue Tempe High Rise

The proposed mixed use high rise condo, hotel, and retail development, 100 Mill Avenue in Tempe, has hit yet another snag. After getting beat up but ultimately winning a battle with the Tempe Historic Preservation Committee over a preliminary design (the committe had felt that the design overwhelmed Tempe’s historic Monti’s La Casa Vieja) 100 Mill Avenue is now “getting it” from Tempe City Development Staff and Tempe based US Airways who say the revised high rise design is too tall for Mill Avenue and the Tempe Town Lake area. The developers want two towers of 320 and 300 feet while US Airways and the City of Tempe want something down in the 250 foot range.

The crazy thing is that the Federal Aviation Administration has already declared that the height of the proposed buildings do not pose a threat to aircraft flying over Tempe.

We at WeKnowUrban wonder if US Airways has a case of “high rise envy” since 100 Mill Avenue would be bigger than theirs :-) (US Airways must be run by men)

I do not know what motive the council has for trying to stop these towers from going up, but I seriously doubt that they know more than the Federal Aviation Administration.

Tempe City Council is supposed to meet in January to decide if they will allow the developers to build the two towers the height they want. I only hope the City Council does the right thing and let the developers build the towers good a tall. We love vertical!
